Introduction
 |
1998 ABOTA President, Ronald Rouda, teaching a lesson from Justice by the People |
"Justice by the People" has been developed by the Foundation of the American Board of Trial Advocates to teach students about one of their most important rights as citizens: Trial by jury. Most of today's students will be called to serve on juries at some point in their lives. For many, it will be their principal way, other than by voting, of directly participating in the democratic process. Jury service imposes an awesome responsibility on citizens to make decisions that are fair and just. The goal of Justice by the People is to help students understand the history and value of their constitutional right to trial by jury.

Students playing "Make Your Case"
|
| Sensationalized trials, courtroom dramas on TV and at the movies, distorted anecdotes in the news... who do you want teaching our kids about our legal system? Mass media or schools? As leaders in our community, I believe we have a responsibility to give teachers the tools they need to help students appreciate the value of our jury system.
Ronald Rouda, 1998 National President of ABOTA, first envisioned "Justice by the People" in 1995. Since then Rouda has worked closely with the development team to turn his vision into a reality.

| "Before we started "Justice by the People", most of what my students knew about the jury system was from the O.J. Simpson trial, and they weren't very impressed. By the time we finished, my kids could see why the jury system is so important and so valuable."
- Pam Meuser, fifth grade teacher
