Craig Lewis of  Houston Sworn in as ABOTA President

Houston lawyer Craig Lewis was sworn in as ABOTA National President at the organization’s National Board of Directors meeting at the MiraMonte Resort and Spa in Indian Wells, Calif., on Jan. 23. Mr. Lewis was elected by the general membership of more than 6,400 members, comprised of a balance of plaintiff and defense lawyers, as well as judges. In its 52-year history, Mr. Lewis is the fifth National ABOTA President to hail from the Lone Star State.

As a longtime member of ABOTA’s National Board of Directors, Mr. Lewis helped re-organize the ABOTA Foundation and served as its first president. One of the primary efforts he spearheaded was a partnership with Scholastic InSchool Solutions that placed the interactive classroom resource, “Justice by the People,” on the Internet. “Justice by the People” is an award-winning teaching curriculum that is now available to more than 50 million students and teachers nationwide. He has also served for several years on ABOTA’s Executive Committee and as a Trustee for the ABOTA Foundation.

ABOTA to provide matching funds for Haiti relief effort

ABOTA will provide funds for the Haiti relief effort by matching donations made by ABOTA members to the American Red Cross. The National Board of Directors unanimously approved an allocation to match the first $25,000 of donations from ABOTA members.

To respond to the this immediate need, please make checks payable to the AMERICAN RED CROSS (details below).

Board members cited the urgent and tremendous need of those who suffered this disaster. Though aid is rushing in from the international community to meet the immediate crisis, the real challenge of rebuilding is just beginning. The magnitude of a 7.0 earthquake has devastated a country that already had 80 percent of its population living in poverty. Huge swaths of Port-au-Prince have no drinking water, sewage systems or electrical service. The death toll is estimated to be 200,000, and 1.5 million people are homeless.

"We know ABOTA's caring and generous members are stepping forward at this time of need. The match is a way to support and double their donations," said ABOTA National President Craig Lewis.

ABOTA addresses concerns with attorney advertising

‘Principles of Good Practice in Attorney Advertising’ serve as a model for state bar associations

What began as a group of ABOTA’s National Board members gathered in a committee room to discuss issues, ethics and obstacles related to attorney advertising has resulted in a statement for the profession to use throughout the country.

The ABOTA Attorney Advertising Committee studied the issue of attorney advertising and related issues. As a result, the Principles of Good Practice in Attorney Advertising were drafted in an attempt to balance the public’s right to be informed with truthful, ethical and professional practices by attorneys and law firms.
